On April
8, 2008, Microsoft released eight new service releases,
including the long awaited Vista SP1 (Service Pack 1). Users
who installed this service pack were in for a bit of a
shock, however, as it was soon discovered that many USB
flash and mouse devices no longer worked properly,
specifically they had intermittent problems or were
unresponsive. Microsoft confirmed the bug, but stated, “We
are aware of the concerns that a recent Microsoft update may
be causing problems with USB devices. We are investigating
the matter and at this time do not have any additional
information to share.”
Being affected by this patch seems,
as of right now, to be hit or miss. Some users who install
the upgrade have no problems whatsoever while other users
encounter big problems which keep their USB mice, keyboards,
or flash drives from working at all.
